The IPL 2025 Auction is now complete, and fans’ excitement has reached new heights as they eagerly await the live action to unfold.
This year’s auction stood out from previous ones, as franchise owners appeared to adopt a more pragmatic approach in their retention and bidding strategies. Preference was seemingly given to players actively representing their national teams, while uncapped talents were offered valuable opportunities to showcase their skills on the grand stage.
A total of 1,574 players from around the globe registered for the IPL 2025 auction, but only 182 were sold, with franchises collectively spending an impressive ₹639.15 crore.
Amid fierce bidding wars, the Mumbai Indians, a five-time champion and one of the most successful franchises, retained their five marquee players: Hardik Pandya (₹16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (₹16.3 crore), Jasprit Bumrah (₹18 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (₹16.35 crore), and Tilak Varma (₹8 crore). While their retention strategy ensured a balanced core across all departments, they further strengthened their squad by securing 18 players during the auction.

IPL 2025 Auction: Unsuccessful Bids for MI
Quinton de Kock
The bidding war initially began between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered the fray. A heated tussle ensued between MI and KKR, but MI eventually stepped back after a few rounds.
KKR secured Quinton for ₹3.60 crore, with MI’s bid being the penultimate one. While MI could have pushed further, they had other roster spots to address and ultimately decided to let him go.
Jofra Archer
Jofra Archer, having previously been a part of the Mumbai Indians setup, was a priority target for MI as he returned to full fitness and form. They immediately entered the bidding war for him, initially competing with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before Rajasthan Royals (RR) joined the fray midway.
MI pushed their bid up to ₹12.25 crore, but RR’s determination outmatched them, with a final bid of ₹12.50 crore. Ultimately, MI had to step away, losing out on a top-tier pacer due to the steep price.
Josh Hazlewood
Mumbai Indians targeted several Indian and overseas pacers in the auction but missed out on most of them for various reasons. Among their pursuits was Australia’s premier pacer, Josh Hazlewood, renowned for his impact in the powerplay and middle overs.
MI entered the bidding war for Hazlewood midway and went up to ₹12.25 crore, but Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) outbid them at ₹12.50 crore to secure his services. With a tight budget, MI had to let go of yet another quality pacer, leaving them disappointed with the outcome.
